Must-Haves for Off-Grid Caravan Adventures

There’s nothing quite like pulling off the bitumen and watching the world fade behind you. Off-grid caravanning is not just about escaping the crowds. It is about finding freedom, embracing the unknown, and exploring Australia on your own terms. But before you head into the bush, you will need the right setup, the right gear, and a little preparation to stay safe and comfortable.

In this guide, we’ll take you through everything we prefer for a successful off-grid camping trip.

1. The Right Caravan for the Job

Off-grid travel puts your caravan to the test. That’s why we recommend starting with a setup that’s made for rugged terrains, rough tracks, and longer stays without plugging in. If you’re looking for a model built to thrive off the beaten track, check out our range of off grid caravans.

For those that want to get away in spacious luxury and adventure with an air of elegance, the XCountry Mad Max 19ft tandem axle off road caravan will lift your standards to a level you never thought possible. However, if you’re after something more compact for those quick getaways, the Gladiator Storm gives you all the performance and comfort you need in a package that’s quick to hitch and easy to tow.

Whether you’re heading into remote areas for a weekend or planning extended trips into the wild, the right foundation makes all the difference. Your caravan should be functional, efficient, and able to support your living space needs without compromise.

At Crusader Caravans, all of our caravans are built with EcoLite composite construction. This unique manufacturing method allows us to create caravans that are strong, well-insulated and lightweight; a premium combination for an off-grid caravan. If you’re interested in learning more about the benefits of composite caravans, check out our page for a full breakdown on this remarkable construction method.

When choosing a model, think about:

  • Off-road capability like reinforced chassis, all-terrain tyres, and CrusadAir suspension
  • Self-sufficiency features such as solar input, water supply, and a strong caravan battery
  • A layout that suits your practical tools, travel habits, and storage needs

2. Power That Lasts

Reliable off-grid power keeps your lights on, your portable fridge running, and your devices charged. In Australia, solar power is the go-to for off-grid energy solutions.

Most setups rely on a combination of fixed solar panels on the roof and portable solar panels that can be repositioned to catch the best sun, maximising solar input and turning your rig into a portable power station. These work hand in hand with deep-cycle batteries to store energy for use at night or during overcast weather.

Solar will do most of the heavy lifting, but a small portable generator can be a game changer when travelling off grid, especially if you are travelling during the cooler months when sunshine is limited, or want to use the air conditioner or small appliances like a coffee machine.

Power-saving tips:

  • Use LED lighting throughout your van
  • Unplug multiple devices when not in use
  • Limit power-heavy gear, and check that essential appliances work efficiently

3. Water and Waste Management

Water is gold when you are off-grid. We usually budget 100L per person, per week, and pack extra in warmer months, or if we’re travelling somewhere with an unreliable water supply. A good filtration system is essential, as water can sit in your tanks for long periods of time, and will give you peace of mind when topping up from tanks, bores or other public sources.

Your caravan should also have separate grey and black water tanks. These let you stay independent while keeping the campsite clean. Biodegradable soaps and cleaning products are gentler on your tanks and safer for the environment.

Water is one of the true off-grid essentials, so check your capacity, monitor your usage, and refill whenever the opportunity arises.

4. Cooking Without the Grid

Food always tastes better when you are outdoors. With the right setup, outdoor cooking can be just as satisfying as a full kitchen. A gas stove and BBQ plate are usually enough, but a camp oven can take your off-grid cooking to the next level. If you are parked up in the right spot, try a solar oven for slow cooking without burning fuel.

Keep your pantry stocked with dry goods, easy meals, and plenty of snacks. We always pack extra in case we decide to stay longer. And don’t forget the fire pit, it’s perfect for both cooking and relaxing under the stars.

A well-stocked pantry and a few clever tools can make all the difference when you are far from the nearest shop. Always pack extra food in case you decide to extend your trip or run into unexpected delays. And if you want to keep your drinks cold, a dual-zone portable fridge is worth every cent if your caravan doesn’t come with a fridge of its own.

Luckily, many modern caravans, including every model in the Crusader range, down to the CRV Esperance 12ft small caravan with shower and toilet, comes with a roomy upright fridge, giving you plenty of storage to enjoy fresh food and cold drinks throughout your journey. However, if you do want to add even more capacity, we also offer the ability to upgrade your Crusader caravan by adding a portable fridge to select models.

5. Tools and Spares

When you are hundreds of kilometres from the nearest mechanic, there is certain essential gear that you simply have to have. A basic toolkit is a must, including screwdrivers, spanners, pliers, and duct tape to deal with basic mechanical issues. Add a tyre repair kit, air compressor, and at least one spare tyre. If you have space, bring spare fuses, hose clamps, and replacement light globes.

Top up your supplies with extra fuel, coolant, engine oil, and recovery gear such as snatch straps, traction boards, and a shovel. These are often overlooked but can save a trip if something goes wrong in the middle of nowhere.

6. Navigation and Communication

A strong sense of direction will get you a long way, but when you are venturing into remote locations, technology can make the journey easier and safer. We never leave without a GPS loaded with offline maps, backed up with printed maps and a compass. For navigation tools, redundancy is key.

Mobile phones are essential, but mobile signals can be patchy off-grid. To stay connected, we also pack two way radios for convoy travel and a satellite phone or emergency beacon for real isolation. These communication devices help keep you in touch with emergency services when needed.

When you’re getting truly off-grid, a satellite phone or personal locator beacon adds another layer of safety if something goes wrong far from help.

7. Comforts That Count

Being remote doesn’t mean roughing it. A good mattress, seasonal bedding, and proper ventilation go a long way. For summer, we bring a fan, and for cool nights, a diesel heater and extra layers. Hiking gear, like good boots and day packs, is also a great addition if you plan to explore on foot.

To stay entertained, bring books, cards, board games, portable speakers, or a fishing rod. A comfortable chair and a clear view are sometimes all you need.

Of course, with the right caravan, many of these comforts are taken care of for you. For example, at Crusader, every model in our range comes with either cabin fans or air conditioning, so you can relax knowing you will have a comfortable journey.

8. Safety and Security

Safety matters even more when help is not just around the corner. A comprehensive first aid kit is a must, complete with treatments for burns, bites, stings, and minor injuries. Personal medications should be packed in full for the length of your trip.

Keep your tools, safety equipment, fire extinguishers, torches, and shovel easily accessible. Add a few campsite safety extras such as motion lights or basic alarms to give you peace of mind when you settle in for the night.

Always let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return. It is a simple habit that could make all the difference in an emergency.
