Glossary of Caravan Types

Updated as at 18/02/2026

Whether you’re new to caravanning or brushing up before your next adventure, it’s helpful to familiarise yourself with the terms we use to describe our vans, their capabilities, and their features. This glossary breaks down some of the most common caravan classifications and road types. Always remember to adjust your travel speed to suit the road conditions.

On Road Conditions

On-Road/Touring caravans are suitable for smooth-surfaced roads and well-maintained dirt roads. They feature lower ground clearance to provide a more comfortable long-distance driving experience.

Features

  • Tyres: Fitted with road tyres for a smoother ride.
  • Ground Clearance: Lower ground clearance for stability during long-distance touring.

Driving Parameters:

  • Speed Limits: Always adhere to local law regarding maximum speed limits.
  • Tyre Pressure: Ensure the caravan’s tyre pressure aligns with the tyre manufacturer guide.

On-Road Surfaces Include:

  • Asphalt road: Smooth, blacktop surface; most common in cities and highways.
  • Concrete road: Harder, lighter surface; often used in urban and industrial areas.
  • Tarmac: Similar to asphalt; used in some roads.
  • Cobblestone / stone-paved: Old-style roads, usually in historic towns.
  • Brick road: Decorative; used in some urban or residential areas.

Off-Road Conditions

Off-road caravans are suitable for well-graded dirt roads and flat sand driving without dunes. They are also suitable for rugged and remote terrain, including loam/soft forest trails and some utility tracks. These caravans feature higher ground clearance making them suitable for steeper inclines and declines.
Please note that the “off-road” capabilities should not exceed the capabilities and capacities of the tow vehicle.

Features

  • Suspension:
    • Coil Spring independent suspension, or
    • Airbag independent suspension.
  • Tyres: Equipped with ALL-Terrain tyres.
  • Ground Clearance:
    • Coil Spring independent suspension: Higher ground clearance for improved road clearance.
    • Airbag independent suspension: Adjustable ground clearance to suit road conditions.
  • Braking: An option for disc brakes is also available.

Tyre pressures for individual terrain conditions:

  • Well-graded dirt roads and flat sand (without dunes): Preferred towing speed is between 30 and 50km/h with tyre pressures between 30-40 PSI.
  • Sand driving (where legal): Preferred tyre pressure is between 20 – 30 PSI.
  • Rugged and remote terrain (including sand with steeper inclines/declines): Preferred towing speed is 5-10 km/h at a tyre pressure of between 20 – 30 PSI.
  • Water crossing: Water crossing is not allowed when the water level is deeper than 400mm.
  • General Assessment: Always assess all tracks properly before using and adapt speed and tyre pressures according to the terrain.

Off-Road Surfaces Include:

  • Dirt road: Unpaved and composed of compacted earth; can be dusty or muddy.
  • Gravel road: Covered with small stones; often found in rural or mountainous areas.
  • Sand road: Soft and loose; common in desert or beach areas.
  • Clay road: Sticky when wet; common in some tropical or agricultural areas.

Roads Not Warranted The following tracks are not warranted for off-road caravans as they may exceed the vehicle’s design limits:

  • Bog roads/Marsh tracks: Waterlogged and soft.
  • Swamp trail: Thick, vegetated wetland.
  • Overgrown trail: Brush and trees encroaching.
  • Poorly maintained tracks: Featuring deep ruts.

Off-Grid Conditions

Off-grid caravans are suitable for extended stays in remote locations without access to traditional external power or water connections.

Features

  • Water Management: Fitted with a grey water tank as standard.
  • Power Systems: Feature high-wattage solar input and higher Ah battery capacity (model dependent).
  • Inverter: Includes an inverter for managing internal electrical requirements.

Optional Off-Grid Features To enhance off-grid suitability, the following options are available:

  • Gasless Systems: Diesel hot water system and heater.
  • Cooking: Gasless cooking with an induction cooktop.
  • Sanitation: Composting toilet.

Connectivity: Starlink provision.
